This Week's New Featured Releases and Reissues

LP - Ultimate Painting - Green Lanes - Colored Vinyl

$14.99 → BUY NOW LISTEN

"“Green Lanes” is the second album from London-based band Ultimate Painting. Formed as a loose collaboration by Jack Cooper (Mazes) & James Hoare (Veronica Falls) the project quickly turned into a full-fledged band in 2014 with the release of their s/t debut album on Trouble In Mind. That album received praise worldwide from NME, Pitchfork, Consequence of Sound & more & with “Green Lanes” the band is poised for more accolades. The album is focused & cohesive, the result of two voices becoming one and each member’s songs complimenting the other, carving out a distinct & unified voice as Ultimate Painting.

Slinking out of the gate, the first song “Kodiak” is an hummable future-classic with Cooper & Hoare’s guitars dancing around each other with ease. The licks & lyrics conjuring up images of Sixties California & Seventies New York; a picture of dark clouds on a sunny day. The rest of the album follows suit with the airy, lush harmonies of “Sweet Chris” & “Two From The Vault” and even kicks up some dust with the chooglin’ “(I’ve Got The) Sanctioned Blues” and the manic ”Woken By Noises”. While their s/t debut was all Cooper & Hoare, this time out, they are augmented by the addition of their live drummer Neil Robinson who provides propulsion on all but one of “Green Lanes”s tracks. The album artwork was once again provided by Portland artist Bradley Kerl, who portrayed Hoare’s London flat & recording space chock full of the equipment used to record both the band’s albums casually tumbling toward the viewer.

2015 sees the band hitting the road again, with appearances at UK & European Festivals as well as a full US Tour in the fall in support of “Green Lanes”

RIYL: Mazes, Veronica Falls, Velvet Underground, The Grateful Dead, Feelies, Parquet Courts, Television, The Kinks, Pavement, The Bats" - Trouble in Mind

LP - Pridjevi - Pridjevi - Black Vinyl

$14.99 → BUY NOW LISTEN

"Pridjevi is the recording project of Dino Santaleza, with vocalists Ivana Picek & Nina Romić; a trio of Croatian songwriters who formed the band on a lark, trading ideas & songs over email until birthing what would become Pridjevi’s debut album. After releasing it via Bandcamp in the spring of 2014 as a digital-only release, the album caught the ears of Trouble In Mind who present it here in the vinyl & compact disc format.

Pridjevi’s s/t debut is a dizzyingly psychedelic magnum-opus & a stunning debut, stitching together a seemingly disparate range of inspirations such as psychedelia, acid rock, baroque pop, Tropicalia, and Eastern ragas into an addictively listenable whole. The band sings entirely in Croation, but the melodies & songs carry the entire weight of the album, holding the listener’s attention until the last note is struck. “Pridjevi”s tunes feel almost like rock devotionals to a higher spirit; heavy, hypnotic & wholly unique. The band has evolved into a fully functional live unit, playing shows & festivals in Europe, building a solid fanbase, particularly in their native country, where the band has already been featured in Rolling Stone & beyond.

RIYL: Tame Impala, Dungen, Goat, Jacco Gardner, Blonde Redhead" - Trouble in Mind

LP - Replacements - The Twin/Tone Years - 4xLP Box Set

$74.99 → BUY NOW LISTEN

"Featuring Sorry Ma, I Forgot to Take Out the Trash (1981), Stink EP (1982), Hootenanny (1983) & Let it Be (1984)
Along with Prince and Hüsker Dü, The Replacements put Minneapolis on the rock map in the 1980s. Among America’s greatest alternative acts of the last two decades, the ’Mats rose from chaotic noise-makers to polished craftsmen, leaving at least three unqualified masterpieces in their wake. In a perfect world, Let It Be, Tim, and Pleased To Meet Me would have all gone platinum - but then again, endearing imperfection was always a hallmark of this band’s music.

The Replacements formed in the wake of the punk explosion of the late 1970s. Their anarchic stage shows had earned them considerable notoriety in local clubs (in fact, they had to change their name from The Impediments after a particularly disruptive performance in one such nightspot). Indie label Twin/Tone took note and signed the quartet, and their first album, Sorry Ma, Forgot To Take Out The Trash was issued in 1981. That record and the Stink EP that followed in the next year were both pretty much standard-issue hardcore thrash.

With 1983’s Hootenanny, however, audiences began to take notice of the songs beneath all the sound and fury; “Color Me Impressed” had exactly that effect on discerning rock listeners. By 1984’s Let It Be, The Replacements’ exponential growth as musicians – and most particularly, Paul Westerberg’s growth as a writer – was undeniable. The album topped critic’s polls across the country and earned The Replacements a place on the roster at Sire Records.

If you’re a ‘Mats purist who believes that the band was never the same after they signed to Sire, then you’ll dig this! The Twin/Tone Years box set, which includes the aforementioned Sorry Ma, Forgot to Take Out the Trash (1981), the Stink EP (1982), Hootenanny (1983) and Let It Be (1984), will be limited to only 8,000 numbered copies, so if you’re looking to enjoy the band’s earlier, more rambunctious material in the best way possible, then you’ll want to hop to it!" - Rhino

LP - Scientists - Scientists - 2015 Reissue

$14.99 → BUY NOW LISTEN

"The Scientists' 1981 wild debut bewildered Perth, Australia's punters with its charging anthems centered on themes of young love and alienation. Obvious in its rebellion yet more pop than punk, the self-titled “Pink Album" deftly embodied the tough-yet-danceable outsider aura of The Ramones, and its unheard of, feverish clip shook the shores of the geographically confined Swan Coastal Plain of down under. Recorded just as the lineup of guitarist-vocalist Kim Salmon (The Cheap Nasties), drummer James Baker (The Victims) and bassist Ian Sharples were breaking up, the album stands as a testament to the contagious chops of Perth's swelling pool of musical talent, and to the promise of Salmon's unwavering vision that would become one of the most celebrated acts of the Aussie underground." - Numero Group

LP - Scientists - Blood Red River - 2015 Reissue

$14.99 → BUY NOW LISTEN

"After trekking east from the suburbs of Perth to take new root in Sydney, in 1983 the Scientists hooked up with producer Chris Logan, who’s credited with the album’s imposing sonic girth and rumbling low end, and premier Aussie punk label Au Go Go for an album that would define their unmistakably swampy, psychotic aura. These six songs revisited band leader Kim Salmon’s interest in the Cramps and the Stooges, while adding in the repetitive dementia of Suicide and elements of cow punk twang, with Salmon’s distinctly unrefined Australian accent snarling tales of lust, confusion and angst." - Numero Group

LP - Mac Demarco - Another One

$15.99 → BUY NOW LISTEN

"Like the days of Steely Dan or Harry Nilsson releasing a classic album every year (or less) comes Mac DeMarco's Another One, a Mini-LP announced one year after the release of the meteorically successful Salad Days. Written and recorded during the downtime between a relentless touring schedule, Another One is an eight-track release that expands the arsenal of Mac's already impressive catalog, showing the maturity of Mac's progression as songwriter: it's a bit more refined, a bit more sophisticated, but nonetheless retains the guts and soul of classic Mac.

Despite working at the same pace as artists like Creedence and The Rolling Stones, coupled with an equally unending schedule of touring and press, it's odd that Mac is labeled as a slacker. With two full-lengths and two EPs released and hundreds of sold out shows performed in the last several years, a recent late night television debut on Conan following a special performance on The Eric Andre Show, it seems, as Mac nears his 25th birthday, there's not a slack bone in the man's body. Great songwriters don't need to reinvent themselves; they just need to keep going and let the songs out in the world. Thus, here's Another One." - Captured Tracks

LP - Jamie XX - In Colour

$21.99 → BUY NOW LISTEN

"In Colour is the Young Turks/XL Recordings debut album from Jaimie xx. The eleven track LP includes previous releases “Girl” and “Sleep Sound” as well as forthcoming single “Loud Places,” which features vocals from Romy Madley Croft. The release of In Colour comes on the back of an incredible six year creative period, which has seen him alternate effortlessly between his role as founding member and producer of The xx, and creator of more electronic and club orientated music as Jamie xx.

A string of acclaimed productions in recent years including debut solo single “Far Nearer,” remixes for the likes of Adele, Radiohead and Florence & The Machine, production work for Drake and Alicia Keys plus We’re New Here - Jamie’s seminal reworking of Gil Scott-Heron’s final studio album - hinted at what was to come. With In Colour – a bold, celebratory, emotional record that features collaborations with The xx band mates Romy Madley Croft (“Seesaw” and “Loud Places”) and Oliver Sim (“Stranger In A Room”), Young Thug and Popcaan (“Good Times”) and Four Tet (“Seesaw”) – Jamie delivers his definitive artistic statement.

“In Colour doesn’t feel like my first album because it’s the end of six years’ work. It’s about all of the music I’ve been inspired by in that time; the people I’ve met, the places I’ve been. I’ve gone from being a fan of electronic music, admiring great artists and producers, to feeling like I’m a part of their world. In Colour is about transition and transformation - going away, coming home, going away again, coming home again - and how that journey changes me every time. I love touring, and the places I’ve visited, but when I’m on my laptop I’m always thinking about home or music. I love being in a band, being a producer, being a DJ. This album is about all of that. In Colour isn’t the end of an era, it’s the start of what’s next.” - Jaimie xx" - XL Records

LP - Syl Johnson - Complete Twinight Singles 2xLP

$19.99 → BUY NOW LISTEN

"There are many great soul singers, but few has inspired hip hop from its early beginning to now. Syl Johnson is a unsung pioneer of musical fusion." - RZA

Syl Johnson began the '60s a blues singer and session guitarist and concluded it having synthesized his own brand of gritty Chicago soul. Their first signee, Syl Johnson set the tone at Twinight Records, writing and producing fifteen 45s during his four year tenure with the label. This double LP neatly bundles each side of each of Johnson's Twinight 45s, from the heavily-sampled grunts on "Different Strokes," to the ghetto-conscious "Concrete Reservation."" - Numero Group

LP - Vangelis - Blade Runner - OST

$27.99 → BUY NOW LISTEN

180 GRAM RED WAX!!!!
"One of the Most Memorable and Important Soundtracks in Movie History: the Music is Beautiful, Poignant, Exciting and Mysterious!

Mastered by Kevin Gray at Cohearent Audio

Ridley Scott's 1982 film Blade Runner is universally hailed as one of the finest sci-fi movies ever made. The landmark film remains a classic to this day and includes breakout performances from a laundry list of popular movie stars such as Harrison Ford, Daryl Hannah, Rutger Hauer, Sean Young, and Edward James Olmos.

The film's accompanying soundtrack composed by the world-renowned Greek musician Vangelis also holds cult status and although it was very well-received by fans and critics at the time of Blade Runner's initial release, including nominations for Best Original Score at the BAFTA and Golden Globe awards, it wasn't officially released until 1994.

Its 12-tracks add up to nearly one hour of music, a dark and melodic amalgamation of classical compositions and synthesizers which mirror the futuristic film noir envisioned by Scott. Vangelis makes each track truly flow into one another with movie dialog samples from the film's actors interspersed throughout. The soundtrack also features notable contributions from Demis Roussos on vocals and a lingering sax solo by Dick Morrissey on "Love Theme."

Blade Runner is a timeless classic, now offered on collectible 180g tranlucent red vinyl courtesy of Audio Fidelity. This limited edition gatefold jacket presentation also includes many colorful stills from the film. Mastered by Kevin Gray at Cohearent Audio." - Audio Fidelity

This Week's New Featured Releases and Reissues

LP - Obnox - Know America

$17.99 → BUY NOW LISTEN

"Coming at you direct from Cleveland, Ohio, LAMONT "BIM" TOHOMAS has transitioned seamlessly from journeyman sticksman in some of the state's finest bands (This Moment In Black History, Unholy Two, Puffy Areolas, Bassholes, etc.) to the full-on phenomenon known as Obnox. From a foundation of dirt-level garage punk, Thomas sculpts deep cuts out of blown-out beats, redline guitar damage, and soulful singing, as if your local gospel choir had been raised on a steady diet of The Pagans and Back From the Grave comps. Know America is a loose concept album, something like Thomas' deep soul take on 'Pump Up The Volume' or 'Airheads'. Right at the start, on "Signal Takeover," Obnox is hijacking the radio waves. A DJ that sounds suspiciously like Thomas, let us know that we are tuned to "Radio 420 WEDE" and that we better prepare for some "trunk punk." In case you haven't picked up what he's laying down, Thomas informs you that the LP you just slapped on your turntable is "reefer on wax." - Ever / Never

LP - Drinks - Hermits On Holiday

$15.99 → BUY NOW LISTEN

“Tim, do I like that dog?” A strange question, a queer query, an odd ask.
The answer surely already known unless one mind knows the other. Which would appear to be the case with Cate and Tim. With Tim and Cate.
Cate Le Bon, born in West Wales, raised under the shadow of a woolen mill, dressed by the field and by the rain. Tim Presley (a.k.a. White Fence), from San Francisco, grew under and over the bridges and streets, combed by corners and by concrete.
A more different musical upbringing you couldn’t dream up. He a black thread strung through the eye of American hardcore, she a shard of glass tapped through a solid wall. Loop the thread around the shard and you have pendular device for predicting the sex. Will it be a boy or a girl?
They both like to drink, coffee mostly and sometimes each other. And once the drinks are drunk, out it comes. The mud slicks and the plates click.
Drinks is a solo project, not a collaboration. It has one mouth, one set of lungs, one mind and four legs.
Drinks are the sound of hermits on holiday, having the time of each others lives." - Birth

LP - 500mg (Michael Gibbons) - To The Firmament

$21.99 → BUY NOW LISTEN

"500MG is MICHAEL GIBBONS of monolithic sounds-great-on-any-substance BARDO POND. With a name inspired by modern-day shaman Terrence McKenna, 500mg represents the essential “heroic dose” of the lysergic. Let’s just say that at this prescription level, only prolific perception-changing experiences can occur. For Mr. Gibbons, his 500mg moniker is a metaphor for the power that music can conjure for a similar (if not higher) elevation of experience. The music of 500mg primarily features guitar, all facets. Electric vibrations, acoustic treatments, straight and experimental approaches, and of course feedback are all just par for the course. Other instrumentation and items thrown onto the 500mg canvass include synthesizer, percussion, and modern sampling. Occasional voice(s) can also be heard if you knock closely. With diverse influences ranging from Popol Vuh, Alvarius B, and Sir Richard Bishop to Earth, Jack Rose, and Skullflower, 500mg is definitely a well-blended trove of peyote treasure. By Mr. Gibbons also heavily channeling his own inner Fripp ‘N Eno, 500mg in purest form is essentially stripped down American komische folk raga, if you can even call it that. It’s fuzzed buzzed blissed goodness for all ears. With full-lengths previously released on Galactic Dossier/Eclipse Records and Three Lobed as well as a few eps too, To The Firmament on Drawing Room represents 500mg’s newest album, and it showcases Mr. Gibbons at his optimal apex. Pressed on 180-gram vinyl with an 11x11” foldout poster included, the LP is limited to 350 copies." - Drawing Room

LP - hMAS - Fear God Honour The King

$21.99 → BUY NOW LISTEN

"Having brought legendary Tasmanian acts The Stickmen, Dacios and Night Terrors to vinyl and the accompanying wider audience, Homeless now presents its first archival release—the art-damaged spazz-punk of h M A S—with their unreleased LP, Fear God Honour The King. Almost two decades after being recorded, this album of lost recordings will be issued on vinyl (or any format) for the first time! Formed in the early '90s amongst the small town confines on the NW coast of Tasmania, BEN CROTHERS and DUNCAN ROBINSON found a new beginning in the music handed down from Ben’s older sister. Anything that came from reading NME and Select got them buying and listening to everything from Pixies, They Might Be Giants and Devo to XTC, Buzzcocks, Wire and Black Sabbath, not forgetting Tlot Tlot. In the time since its recording in 1997, the original master tapes have been lost and this single attempt at a mix is all that remains. In a way this makes Fear God Honour The King exactly like everything h M A S had always done before—spontaneous but flawed, pointless but essential. Remastered and remixed by MIKEY YOUNG and Ben Crothers. Packaged with an innersleeve with notes by JULIAN TEAKLE and ANDY HAZEL.

“While the rest of the world was caught up in grunge, Britpop or the Spice Girls or intentionally reacting against these things, Duncan Robinson and Ben Crothers were listening to Devo and Pixies, obsessing about other Hobart bands, watching lots of David Lynch, consuming sherbet at an unhealthy rate and making a virtue out of short attention spans. The music that emerged at a stunning rate, sounded something like the cast of Rugrats scoring Japanese advertisements with a Casiotone, a broken guitar and the world's oldest drum machine.”—Andy Haze

Includes a download with bonus cassette-only albums. Limited to 300 copies with only a handful available for the USA." - Homeless

LP - Liquid Idiot / Idiot Orchestra - Liquid Idiot / Idiot Orchestra

$15.99 → BUY NOW LISTEN

"Prior to forming Liquid Liquid in 1981, the band members were in two other groups: Liquid Idiot and Idiot Orchestra. While these ensembles sounded more experimental than groove-oriented, the beginnings of Liquid Liquid’s spatial / conceptual framework can be heard here.  Liquid Idiot started at Rutgers University in the late ’70s and soon relocated to NYC where they performed at various lofts and clubs including Tier 3, Mudd Club and CBGB. The band even encouraged audience members to bring their own instruments to their early shows. Idiot Orchestra was an offshoot that included a dozen or more players (clarinet, sax, trumpet, violin, cello, synth, bass, marimba and drums) resembling a no wave version of Raymond Scott’s big band.  As musician and artist Richard McGuire recalls, “We weren’t trying to sound like anyone. We weren’t imitating anyone. We were just playing. I keep using ‘outsider art’ as a reference to what we were doing. None of it was made for a market; it wasn’t made with any intention other than the enjoyment of making it.” This split archival LP collects two rare 7-inches from 1978 and 1980, both of which were originally pressed in hyper-limited editions and self-released by the bands. The package also features a fanzine of ephemera, rare photos and new interview with McGuire." - Superior Viaduct

12in - Liquid Liquid - Liquid Liquid EP - Reissue

$13.99 → BUY NOW LISTEN

"Liquid Liquid emerged from New York City's vibrant Downtown scene in 1981. Formed by drummer Scott Hartley, bassist Richard McGuire, vocalist Sal Principato and marimba player Dennis Young, the group cut their teeth in underground clubs and street art circles before solidifying their trailblazing style—a fusion of irresistible basslines, junkyard percussion and urgent, free-flowing lyrics. Their three EPs, all originally released on legendary 99 Records, would heavily influence dance-oriented indie rock of the early aughts (LCD Soundsystem, DFA Records et al.). Their eponymous debut establishes Liquid Liquid's uncompromising vision, from its startling black-and-white sleeve design to the minimalist grooves found within. While Principato's striking pitch-shifted shouts on "Bell Head" lead hypnotic circular rhythms, "Rubbermiro" brings in dub-inflected melodica and Richard Edson (Sonic Youth, Konk) on trumpet, closing appropriately in a locked-groove." - Superior Viaduct

12in - Liquid Liquid - Successive Reflexes EP - Reissue

$13.99 → BUY NOW LISTEN

"Following their debut in 1981, Liquid Liquid wasted no time with their second release the same year. Successive Reflexes picks up where the previous EP leaves off with "Lock Groove," a slow-paced deconstruction of Fela Kuti and Can that shows how quickly the band was able to capture their stripped-down approach in the studio. "Push" drives forward with unapologetic funk, yet still sounds utterly unique. Like their 99 labelmates ESG, Liquid Liquid created music on their own terms and artfully avoided the trappings of any single genre." - Superior Viaduct

12in - Liquid Liquid - Optimo EP - Reissue

$13.99 → BUY NOW LISTEN

"Liquid Liquid continued toward dance-floor perfection with their third EP. 1983's Optimo features the band's best-known songs and remains a high water mark for post-punk aficionados. The title track positively erupts when the bass enters, forcing even the stiffest person in the room to move. While it would be an understatement to say that "Cavern" may sound familiar (due to its gross sampling in Grandmaster Melle Mel's "White Lines"), Liquid Liquid were indeed the originators of this iconic New York riff." - Superior Viaduct

LP - Lizzy Mercier Descloux - Press Colour - 2xLP Reissue

$26.99 → BUY NOW LISTEN

" LIZZY MERCIER DESCLOUX may have come of age in Paris, but it’s in New York’s Lower East Side that she really came alive. The French punk pioneer, a friend of Patti Smith and Richard Hell, moved to New York in 1977 and soon immersed herself in avant-garde poetry, performance art, and punk music. Closely associated with the founders of ZE Records (home to Was (Not Was) and Kid Creole & The Coconuts), Descloux released her debut album, Press Color, in 1979, revealing a punk-funk sound that positioned her as the French answer to the UK group The Slits or New York’s own ESG. Just as The Slits gave "I Heard It Through The Grapevine" a makeover fit for warehouse parties on their celebrated Cut LP, Descloux’s album revealed a penchant for the unexpected cover version too. It kicks off with a brilliantly rhythmic take on The Crazy World Of Arthur Brown’s "Fire"–a hit, like Marvin Gaye’s in 1968. There’s also a version of Lalo Schifrin's theme from Mission Impossible that appears to predate the breakbeat scene by a good twenty years. Elsewhere, we hear echoes of Serge Gainsbourg’s Afrobeat-influenced work, Blondie’s disco-inflected punk, and Talking Heads’ world music-inspired art pop. Of course, an artist with song titles including “Tumor" (a cover of “Fever" with amended lyrics) and "Herpes Simplex" is never a shoo-in for mainstream acceptance, and like many a No Wave classic, the album sold little. Now regarded as a cult classic, this Light In The Attic reissue is presented in an extended 18-track edition, collecting much of Descloux’s work, including "Morning High," recorded with Patti Smith. LP includes a poster and download and is pressed on blue vinyl." - Light In The Attic

LP - Reatards - Grown Up Fucked Up - Reissue

"Shortly after the release of Teenage Hate, the debut album from the Reatards, an 18-year-old Jay Reatard started working on a new album. He was spitting out punk rock anthems a mile a minute at this point, so a new record made sense. And what else was there to do? He’d quit school a couple years back so a normal day for Jay meant he was bumming around midtown Memphis winding people up.  At this point, Eric Friedl had introduced Jay to Meghan Smith, via mail or phone or something. And they became fast friends. Smith and Blake Wright ran Empty Records out of Seattle, and the label made plans to release Grown Up Fucked Up. After a complete mess of a European tour with the Persuaders, Jay came back and recorded the album with some help from his girlfriend at the time (and future Lost Sounds bandmate) Alicja Trout. It soon became clear that there was a harder edge to everything. While Teenage Hate had been nasty, it was rooted in the Crypt / Oblivians scene of scuzzy rock, with covers of Fear, but also Buddy Holly. Grown Up Fucked Up was a power pogo into Killed By Death-style punk rock. The songs jumped off the record and grabbed you by the throat. They were passionate, ridiculous and utterly authentic. It wasn’t too long afterwards that he put out the equally amazing “Your So Lewd” single (now included on the album as well). Like everything Jay did, he did it his way. His recordings hold up because they are completely unique. He created a scene full of imitations, but no one duplicated him. Goner wanted to make sure they stayed true to Jay’s aesthetic with the repress, so they didn’t mess with it much. Smith sent over the original DAT recordings and the record was sourced directly from them. Kyle Johnson at Rocket Science Audio handled the transfer, and Jason Ward mastered to vinyl. Doug Easley took care of the digital mastering. The record was pressed at Memphis Record Pressing. Man, Jay would have loved that so much of this happened in Memphis. Goner is proud to put it out there again: Grown Up Fucked Up by the Reatards." - Goner

"Live Versions is a limited edition 9-track offering from Australian neo-psychedelic rockers Tame Impala recorded live in Chicago, IL during the band's 2013 US tour. The live arrangements of these songs are distinctly different than the studio versions and were chosen for this release specifically for that reason. Includes inventive takes on material from the group's acclaimed first two albums - 2010's Innerspeaker ("Why Won't You Make Up Your Mind," "Desire Be Desire Go") and 2012's Lonerism ("Endors Toi," "Mind Mischief," "Be Above It," "Feels Like We Only Go Backwards," "Apocalypse Dreams")." - Caroline

LP - Uniform - Perfect World

$12.99 → BUY NOW LISTEN

"UNIFORM formed in New York City in late 2013 when old friends BEN GREENBERG (HUBBLE, THE MEN, PYGMY SHREWS) and MICHAEL BERDAN (YORK FACTORY COMPLAINT, DRUNKDRIVER, BELIEVER/LAW) realized they lived on the same street. Their impulsive collaboration quickly yielded "Our Blood" / "Of Sound Mind and Body" single. The six tracks that comprise the equally abrasive but more refined Perfect World have been coming together between tours and work ever since. The music that Greenberg and Berdan conjure up under the Uniform moniker is immediate, aggressive, and even primal in form, but it plumbs untold depths. Berdan’s venomous voice mines deeply personal themes of resentment, regret, reflection and addiction over the hum of Greenberg’s almost impossibly disciplined guitar, bass synth, and drum machine lines. Greenberg uses the word “templatized” to describe their approach to writing songs for Uniform.   “There’s this set bunch of gear to create sounds, and it only creates sound through a certain process, or within its own limitations,” Greenberg said. “The goal of songwriting is to see how many different kinds of sounds you can get from the same basic process and machine.”   On Perfect World, that machine is firing on all cylinders. The guitar is run through a cheap ’80s preamp marketed to metal kids. The drum machine is equally no-frills, an Akai XR20 that Greenberg says “most people wouldn’t want to keep around.” These humble components are combined with noisy synth and Berdan’s profound howling to form something much greater. Post-punk, synthpunk, and industrial traditions are borrowed from as needed, but the constraints placed on the process mean the result is unique to Uniform. Berdan describes his lyrics as the consequence of feeling “so full of pain, confusion, deep selfishness, and general animosity that you make some horrible mistakes and have to learn how to forgive yourself for them.” 'Perfect World' feels like the sum of all that pain and confusion, but it also feels like the catharsis. 7in - Heaters - Mean Green

$9.99 → BUY NOW LISTEN

"Mean Green” is the A-side track of the band’s new 7” single, presenting a surf-centric slab of sonic stomp that doubles as a definition of “mean.” In the case of HEATERS, “mean” is meant in the context that might be used to describe a 1970 GTO piloted by a jittery Warren Oates—not belligerent, but aggressive, blank-eyes staring at the horizon, fueled by dread and ready to accelerate into the nearest dangerous curve. The flipside of the single, “Levitate Thigh,” proves the band to be possessed by the power of rock & roll, initially bringing the tempo to a stuttering slow-roll, before Heaters are once again the willing captives of a Seeds-level web of sounds, guitar snarl, feedback & drums creating the trap in which the band has no chance—no desire—to escape." - Beyond Beyond Is Beyond
