This Week's New Featured Releases and Reissues

LP - Dead Moon - Nervous Sooner Changes

$13.99 → BUY NOW LISTEN

"Another all time Dead Moon classic.  The band really hit their stride on this one!  The best rock band of the 90's and 2000's kicks out some of their finest rockers and ballads.  Features all time greats like Diamonds in the rough, Say it isn't so, Running out of time, Somewhere far away and Windows of time.  A must have for any fan of the band and rock music in general." - Mississippi Records

LP - Various Artists - Six Feet Under

$12.99 → BUY NOW LISTEN

Big Wedge Records in association with Mississippi Records have compiled a must-own lp collection of early rock, country and rockabilly obscurities entitled "Six Feet Under."  And as you might guess from the name, this comp is chock full of whiskey soaked, sordid rippers sure to make music fans of all types jump at the chance to throw this one down on their turntable.  Here with the straight facts is Big Wedge:

"Compilation of unbelievable rockabilly, country and early rock instrumentals.  All obscure and hard to find and not a loser in the bunch.    A mind blower for fans of the Cramps, Lee Hazelwood, real deal rock n' roll and out there country. Songs about graveyards, misery, trains, ghosts and so on. We highly recommend this one."

Collections like "Six Feet Under" are more than necessary cuz otherwise we'd have no way to hear these nearly lost, super collectable, unheard gems from artists like Johnny Fortune, Mystery Trio, Ramblin' Rebels and oh so many more.   Fans of Sun Records, Wanda Jackson, Hasil Adkins, Link Wray, the aforementioned Lee Hazlewood and those Songs The Cramps Taught Us comps, as well as any fans of true down and dirty Americana, will absolutely fall in love with this collection.  We sure have.  "Six Feet Under" is just the touch of backwoods twang and moonshine jolt that'll make any day seem brighter.  An we definitely all see more songs about ghosts, misery, trains, graveyards and heartbreak in our collections.  HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!!!

LP - Isaiah Owens - You Without Sin Cast The First Stone

$13.99 → BUY NOW LISTEN

"A truly unique Gospel stylist - Isaiah Owens plays guitar and sings in his own very distinctive and otherworldly way.  Isaiah plays loud and with quite a bit of dissonance, his voice floating above beautifully.  This LP features some of his finest performances - captured from his radio broadcasts in Montgomery Alabama and from studio recordings.  We are very proud to present this material.  Liner notes by Kevin Knutt (of the greatest radio show of all time - Sinners Crossroads, as well as the Case Quarter label)" - Mississippi

LP - Various Artists - I'm In A Strange Town

$11.99 → BUY NOW LISTEN

"Compilation of top notch Gospel and blues recorded between 1927 and 1967.  A mix of very well known artists such as Blind Lemon Jefferson, Gary Davis and Robert Wilkins and more obscure folks like John Lee and Charles White.  A record filled with some of Mississippi Records favorite recordings - ripping guitar work outs, soulful ballads, loping drunken jug bands and more.  All songs are on the theme of travel, death and transcendence.  Got an existential crisis?  This may be the record for you." - Mississippi

LP - Idrissa Soumaoro - Ampsa

$14.99 → BUY NOW LISTEN

"A classic and seldom heard LP from Bamako!  Not just your average Malian LP, Ampsa features has to be heard to be believed organ, hypnotic guitar and amazing sweet vocals. A truly great LP and must have for fans of Malian music. A faithful reproduction of the original with the addition of liner notes by Florent Mazzoleni.  A co release with Singasongfighter." - Mississippi

LP - Arvo Part - Passio 2xLP

$22.99 → BUY NOW LISTEN

" We here present the work of Anthony Pitt and Tonus Peregrinus, being Pärt’s passion cantata from 1982, winner of the Cannes Classical Award.  Comprised mostly of hypnotic tintinnabuli, which has become a signature of Pärt’s oeuvre , the work is a slow moving liturgical piece offering a vastness, solemnity and effective intimacy which allows the listener to contemplate the mysteries and suffering of the canonical text taken from the Gospel of John, chapters 18 and 19. Gatefold double LP.  "

LP - Flower Travellin Band - Satori (2012 Repress)

$22.99 → BUY NOW LISTEN

"Satori" is the crowning achievement of The Flower Travellin' Band's pretty stellar oeuvre (and quite possibly the greatest Japanese rock and roll album, well - EVER), and since it just got reissued by Phoenix Records (again), we figured we'd give it the "star-treatment" it so deserves! First we'll let Phoenix fill you in on the particulars:

"2012 repress. Deluxe LP format; 180 gram pressing. Reissue of the second Flower Travellin' Band album, originally issued by Atlantic Records in Japan in 1971. Satori is a conceptual hard rock/psych album driven by Hideki Ishima's furious guitar licks which erupt and explode over the harmonic heart beat of the drums and bass. Yamanaka's banshee-like vocal style turned him into an occidental Iggy Pop or Robert Plant while the band itself was rapidly becoming Japan's answer to Led Zeppelin. Satori is a huge album in every way. From power chords to Eastern-tinged North African six-string freak-outs and crashing tom-toms, the band flexes its collective muscle from start to finish. In short, this is a real rock classic of the type they simply don't make any more."

STOP. If you haven't already purchased this record, DO IT NOW. We'll wait.... OK - got it? Let's begin. "Satori" is a full-tilt RAGING demon of a record that ebbs and swells like a psych record, but ROCKS as hard (if not harder) than any metal/hard rock record from 1971. Think about it - by 1971, Sabbath only had two albums out and this record SMOKES both "Black Sabbath" and "Paranoid". Might sound blasphemous, but it's fucking true. Up to this point The Flower Travellin' Band's output had been rooted in the blues-based traditions of bands like Led Zeppelin and Deep Purple, but with "Satori" (their second album proper) they completely obliterate any comparisons to The Zep or their mudsharkin' contemporaries. Explosions of freaked out, Eastern-tinged guitar soloing that erupt from the tunes like molten lava, while the rhythm section stomps and writhes like a two-hearted monster from the gates of Hades. It's muscular, it's sweaty, and hell - it's fucking SCARY. Comprised of five suites ("Satori" Pt's 1-5) that are mostly instrumental, with vocalist "Joe"s minimal vocal stylings - dropping in a few verses, wails and "Whoah-oh-oh-ohs" here and there with a full-throated roar that sounds like a call towards Armageddon! (Do you get the feeling we like this one, yet?) Ranked at #1 by Julian Cope in his "Japrocksampler" book's Top Fifty albums, so if that's not an endorsement we don't know what is! It's also TOTALLY ESSENTIAL in our books as well, so what are you waiting for? FUCKING GET IT.

LP - Headstone - Still Looking - Original 1974 Stock

$199.99 → BUY NOW LISTEN

ACID ARCHIVES WORTHY PRIVATE PRESS HARD ROCK / PSYCH FROM MID 70S COLUMBUS OHIO!!!!!!!

"The opening seven minute title track is a killer journey through local underground guitar psych, and there's plenty more good stuff aboard including some more lyrical moves. Underrated LP, solid all through, better than many $1000 LPs. Great generic sleeve of eagle "still looking". The band also had three non-LP 45s which are pretty good." -Acid Archives

"Headstone consisted of three Fiynn brothers and a friend Torn Applegate who recorded this, their sole album at the Rome Recording Studios in Columbus Ohio in 1974…This album is full of fuzz and extended guitar solos and most of the tracks are well constructed with lots of tempo changes and well played with super swirling Hammond, hard drumming, hard riffing and lots of guitar effects."- rockasteria.blogpsot.com

LP - JPT Scare Band - Acid Acetate Excursion/Rape Of The Titan's Sirens - Reissue 2xLP

$25.99 → BUY NOW LISTEN

"Banded together during the tumultuous years of the early 70s, JPT Scare Band fused a sound equally heavy in hard rocking blues as it was tripped out in psychedelia, creating a sound so imposing that it perfectly reflected the emotions of the era. Formed by guitarist/vocalist Terry Swope, drummer Jeff Littrell, and bassist Paul Grigsby, JPT Scare Band began recording songs in their Kansas City basement and soon compiled a vault full of reel-to-reel tapes that would make up much of the band’s catalogue.

Though the band formed in 1973, JPT Scare Band’s first album, Acid Acetate Excursion, wasn’t released until 1994, over twenty years after the band’s formation. Along with Acid Acetate Excursion, the band, in conjunction with Monster Records, released two more albums, 1998’s Rape Of Titan’s Sirens and 2000’s Sleeping Sickness. Both releases highlighted the bands heavy psych/proto-metal blues sound through the otherworldly and unheralded guitar work of Terry Swope, and each has become an underground cult classic.

The new millennium has seen JPT Scare Band delve deeper into their archive of recorded material, accumulated through massive jam sessions throughout the 70s, as well as the 90s, and a flood of product was soon released. Through the band’s self-realised label Kung Bomar, seven albums hit the streets including 2002’s brilliant Past Is Prologue, 2007’s stunning release of all new material with Jamm Vapour and most recently, 2009’s Rumdum Daddy.

In the waning months of 2009, JPT Scare Band merged their energies with rock label Ripple Music to release Acid Blues Is The White Man’s Burden, a collection of unreleased tracks, extended jams, and outstanding cover tunes that helped bridge the gaps in the JPT chronology and turn on a whole new generation on to their classic version of acid rock.

Despite being scattered across the US, JPT Scare Band has never stopped working and creating relevant music. JPT have the uncanny ability, an almost shared consciousness, to pick up right where they left off after being apart for fifteen years and hammer out a set of hard edged guitar driven rock that would have made Cream sound soft. JPT Scare Band will appeal to fans of Jimi Hendrix, Cream, and Black Sabbath.

This April, Ripple Music will release a very special LP set consisting of their first two, seminal releases –Acid Acetate Excursion and Rape Of The Titan’s Sirens – re-presented in full, with new gatefold album art that incorporates the images of the original two albums. Originally recorded in the 1970s, these albums have been out of print since the original Monster Records release in the early 90s and represent the full early history of the band that Classic Rock Magazine once hailed as one of the, “Lost pioneers of Proto-Metal.”

Acid Acetate Excursion and Rape Of The Titan’s Sirens will be released together via Ripple Music on 28th April 2015." - Ripple Music

LP - Kenny Knight - Crossroads

$19.99 → BUY NOW LISTEN

"The first-ever reissue of the private-press country-rock rarity by Colorado auto body painter, Marine, and garage band lifer Kenny Knight—he played in the original ’60s Black Flag—Crossroads recalls a homebrew American Beauty-era Grateful Dead in its world-weary, low-key mood and indelible songwriting. Faded, anxious, melancholy, and beautifully woozy, this out-of-time document belies its 1980 release date. Produced in cooperation with Numero Group, it features liner notes by writer and collector Michael Klausman and Kenny himself.

I met up with Kenny Knight in the parking lot of a Guitar Center at the southern end of Denver a couple years back. He was there to drop off a guitar that needed to be repaired, and I took that as a sign that he was still involved with music. He did confirm that was the case, for which I was glad. Despite the intervening decades since Kenny had released his sole LP, it was easy to recognize him as he stepped out of his pickup truck; although his hair was shorter, he still retained the compact frame and thoughtful gaze you see on the cover of Crossroads. He struck me as being somewhat shy and diffident, a person who values his privacy and probably wary about some random guy being interested in the music he’d made long ago.

About a year and half before our meeting, I came across Kenny’s record sitting in the bins at a shop in Denver, and it just had that look: sepia tones, a rugged guy hanging off a train, all original songs, a pedal steel player in the credits. Promising stuff, the only thing I was unsure about was its 1980 release. Yet from the first couple of notes I was totally elated, for these were beautifully well-crafted songs, timeless, really, and impossible to date if it hadn’t been for the copyright on the back of the LP cover. It turned out there was nary a mention to be found on Google of this album, and none of my collector friends had ever seen it. Now, I realize there’s nothing more obnoxious than reading liner notes which paint some self-aggrandizing portrait of the heroic record-digger, and that’s certainly not what I’m trying to do here. The fact of the matter is this LP and its songs, which are simply undeniable; if I hadn’t picked up Crossroads and passed it around, it would only have been a matter of time before someone else did.

There’s a very singular combination of world-weariness and hope running throughout Crossroads, a still timely grappling with the realities of getting by in this country. You can hear it most clearly in “America,” which is at turns a paean to this nation, as well a plea to it: “don’t lock me out.” This juggling of sophisticated dualities extends even to his love songs, as on “One Down” (possibly the album’s finest track, and one which could sit comfortably next to American Beauty’s best), where he asks, “how much can one heart take?” while still acknowledging that he’ll “stay in love forever more.”

As so often is the case, life got in the way of Kenny’s music, and even after crafting such a perfect LP, his hopes and dreams would remain unrealized, with family obligations and service to his country ultimately having to take precedence. As we talked in that Guitar Center parking lot, I discovered a quietly humble man, proud of the album he’d made and seemingly appreciative that I’d expressed interest, that the folks for whom I’d been playing it also thought it was great. It was sadly obvious, though, that he didn’t think Crossroads had received the reception he felt it had deserved; he told me rather regretfully that he had tossed all the leftover copies of the pressing into a dumpster at some point during the 1990s. And while he didn’t expressly say it, I got the sense that he had no other choice but to throw them out, as if he just couldn’t face the album’s commercial failure any longer. Some records take a while to find their audience, however, and Crossroads is one of them; it’s just a matter of holding on.

LP - Lewis - Romantic Times

$19.99 → BUY NOW LISTEN

"Earlier this year, we released the mysterious, bewitching L’Amour, a 1983 private press record thought to be the only release by one of music’s true lost talents: Lewis.

So lost, in fact, was Lewis, he eluded every effort to track him down. Scant details were known: just a series of possibly apocryphal stories about a sports car-driving Canadian with a model on his arm and a habit of skipping town when there were bills to be paid.

Deciding that Lewis’ spider web-delicate songs demanded to be heard, we put the album out anyway, offering to present the due royalties to anyone who could prove they were Lewis.

One sure thing was this: Lewis was a man of many names: Randall A. Wulff among them. Now we have either found another alias – or perhaps even his real name – on the sleeve of a completely unknown album.

Sourced soon after the re-release of L’Amour, Romantic Times is the 1985 follow-up to L’Amour – and it’s released as Lewis Baloue. The name may be slightly different, but this is absolutely our man: a familiar blond posing on the sleeve, a familiar, tortured voice pouring his heart out over languid synths and synthetic waltz beats.

Remastered from a sealed, vinyl copy of the ultra-rare album, the album was discovered in the vaults of DJ and collector Kevin “Sipreano” Howes in Vancouver, BC. It’s so rare that what is, at present, the only other known copy – found in the same Calgary store where Aaron Levin discovered a batch of sealed copies of L’Amour – is presently soaring into quadruple digits on eBay.

Even engineer Dan Lowe, credited for working on the album at Calgary’s Thunder Road Studios, remembered little about the session other than that Lewis seemed to be “under the influence”. Yet the music is utterly captivating.

The album further fleshes out the Lewis myth – we see him pictured in that white suit with his famous white Mercedes and a private jet too; we hear him focussing more intently on matters of the heart, and appearing to unravel in the process. “I felt like I was witnessing a full-blown exorcism of a phantom clad in the finest linen,” writes filmmaker and historian Jack D. Fleischer in his brand new liner notes. “This record went further [than L’Amour ]. It was a personal plea, of sorts. Something had gone wrong. Nerves were clearly exposed.”

It paints Lewis, then, as being more like a David Lynch character than even his debut did, exposing the darkness beneath the sheen. The album is presently being readied for release to the throng of new fans Lewis has found, willingly or not. The man himself remains a total enigma." - Light In The Attic

LP - My Expansive Awareness - My Expansive Awareness - Import

$14.99 → BUY NOW LISTEN

"My Expansive Awareness is a neo-psychedelic garage band from Zaragoza, Spain. The spacial sounds and loops of the band induce the listener into a trance. Their melodies, that have a pop touch mixed with distortions and energetic drums, reach different levels of sounds and sensations, creating a unique song style of their own. The band launched their first EP “Uroboros” in February 2014 and have shared
the stage with artists such as Vibravoid, The Underground Youth, Holy Wave, Dead Rabbits and Black Market Karma in Spain. Most recently, in October 2014 they started composing their first self-titled LP, which was launched in January 2015 by Analog Love." - Lisbon Psych Fest

LP - Slava Ranko - Arctic Hysteria

$14.99 → BUY NOW LISTEN

"ORIGINAL SEALED COPIES of this intense synth weirdo LP from 1981..Strange mix of dark synth and Classical Japanese melodies...contains insert. From back cover notes: "I do not want to play music which sounds as if it comes from familiar instruments, music which is based on chord patterns, or music which fits nicely within any particular stereotyped tradition... What I want is the terrifying, the menacing, the cruel, the chaotic, the darkly exciting, the ecstatic, the irrational -- music that resounds between the cells and in the intergalactic voids..." --Slava Ranko. Nuff said there really... if you are into fucked up synth records you NEED to own this. He was also the producer for FACTRIX and TUXEDOMOON if that means anything to ya... HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!" - Aaron Dilloway

LP - Tame Impala - Currents - Limited Colored Wax 2xLP

$29.99 → BUY NOW LISTEN

"Much has changed since Tame Impala first emerged with an EP of dusty home recordings in 2008. By and large Kevin Parker’s approach to recording has not, though the sound coming out of his home studio has vastly expanded, as has the number of people anticipating the fruits of his labor. Tame Impala’s third album is titled Currents, and on it Parker addresses a blindingly colorful panorama of transition in the most audacious, adventurous fashion he’s yet to capture on record.

Dense with heady lyrical introspection, musically the most playful, bold and varied Tame Impala record to date, Currents is Parker putting down his weapons and embracing change as the only constant – sonically, thematically, and personally. Musically, Currents sounds like the work of a player on top of his game and having a blast, Parker indulging his whims and unafraid to dive down the rabbit hole after an idea.

Again operating as a one man studio band, Parker’s resultant record calls to mind contemporary hip hop production, Thriller, fried '70s funk, the irreverent playground Daft Punk presented on Discovery, swathes of future pop and emotional '80s balladry, all filtered through a thoroughly modern psychedelic third eye. A genre-bending soundscape fueled equally by curiosity as it is consciousness, it’s exhilarating new territory for Tame Impala.

Lyrically the record finds Parker in a very different place in 2015 to where he was seven years ago. Transitions in life, relationships, perspectives, mindsets – Currents maps Parker’s evolution through these and finds him a brand new person. In parts of both 2010’s Innerspeaker and 2012’s Lonerism Tame Impala sounded like a guy on the outer wanting in, now that he’s found himself on the inside Parker’s turned the spotlight in on himself. Stopping to reflect on the road behind, where he finds himself currently, and the road ahead, Currents spans a tumultuous time.

The first track from the record to be unveiled, "Let It Happen," is a perfectly encapsulating preview of what lies ahead. Coming in just short of eight minutes, "Let It Happen" traverses a swag of sonic terrain in its duration. The drums and Parker’s vocal introduction lull the listener with a sense of familiarity, until it all sweeps up into a cosmos once populated only by French robots, with insistent melody, broken machine loops, synthetic orchestration, surfing vocoder and a shredding guitar outro.

Typically, initial Tame Impala recordings saw Parker’s vocal hidden beneath a layer of psychedelic fuzz, drenched in reverb, lyrics ambiguous. Currents finds his voice front and center, so no bones are made about his intent. Sketched out in planes, cars, hotels and homes since the completion of Lonerism in 2012, pieced together over the later part of 2014 and early 2015 at home in Fremantle, Western Australia, Currents was written, performed, recorded, produced and mixed by Kevin Parker. Tame Impala presents Currents, a soundtrack to life’s turbulent flow." - Interscope
